Dek: Are the weak hands out? What gold must prove. Spot gold closed up 1.84% on Nov 2, yet it sits below its August low and its own 200-day average. The Editor reads a bounce inside a downtrend; a reversal is not yet confirmed.
In brief. Gold rose almost two percent on November 2, after a long slide. The Editor reads a bounce inside a falling market, not a turn back up. Gold still sits below its August low and well below its long-run average. A real turn needs gold back above both, proof the nervous holders are gone.
The verdict
The publisher asked whether gold's bounce signals a return to the uptrend after a shakeout of weak hands. The Editor's verdict: a bounce inside a downtrend, not a reversal. Spot gold closed at $3,945.70 bid, up 1.84% (Kitco, 5:00 PM ET Nov 2). That close sits below spot's August low of $4,018.9, set on Aug 3 (Dukascopy XAU/USD bid, daily data).
The hook: a sharp bounce off the lows
Spot gold closed up $71.30 (Kitco, 5:00 PM ET Nov 2). Its range for the session ran from $3,879.40 to $3,971.00 (same source). The close held in the upper third of that range. The Editor reads firm demand at the lows.
The tension: are the weak hands out?
A shakeout works in two steps. A fast drop forces out holders with thin conviction or borrowed money, and the price rebounds once they are out. December gold futures fit the pattern on Nov 2. The contract first fell to $3,889.0, under its Oct 30 close of $3,898.9, then rallied to a last trade of $3,955.5 (Yahoo Finance, 4:57 PM ET). A rebound off a low fits a shakeout. It does not prove one: price data shows the rebound, not who sold.
The finding: what gold must prove
The slide broke two floors. December futures fell through their Sep 23 low of $4,310.7 on Sep 28, then through their August low of $4,074.0 on Oct 22 (Yahoo Finance, daily data). The Editor reads three checkpoints, in order. First, a close above $4,000; neither spot nor December futures is above $4,000. Second, December futures back above their Sep 23 low near $4,311. Third, each price back above its own 200-day average. Until gold clears all three, a return to the uptrend is not yet confirmed.
