The AI Selloff Reaches the Chip Sector. The Broad Market Gives Up Far Less.

October 30, 2026 · ET

Dek: The pressure on AI spending has spread from the giants to the chipmakers that supply them. The rest of the market finished Oct 29 higher, and its Oct 30 losses ran at a fraction of the chip slide.

In brief. The semiconductor sector fund fell 6.98% on Oct 30 (CNBC, close Oct 30). The selloff over artificial intelligence spending has spread from the giant tech firms to the companies that make their chips. Six of eleven sectors still closed higher (CNBC, close Oct 30). The Editor reads a chip selloff, not a market-wide exit.

The finding

The selloff now reaches the chip sector, and the Editor reads it as stopping there. The semiconductor sector fund closed 6.98% lower (CNBC, close Oct 30). The S&P 500 ETF fell 1.77% and the Russell 2000 ETF 1.65% (CNBC, close Oct 30). The Editor reads one verdict across every leg: chips carry the loss, the broad market carries a fraction of it.
