After the Washout: Does the Chip Bounce Outlast the Open?

October 23, 2026 · ET

The Editor and the AB Desk · Premarket read, Oct 23, 2026

The lead

The question for the Oct 23 open is whether the premarket chip bounce outlasts the bell after the Oct 22 washout. The chip ETF closed Oct 22 at 523.35, down 5.99%, the heaviest drop among the major ETFs (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET Oct 22). Premarket it was at 526.69, up 0.64% (CNBC, 6:49 AM ET), a small rebound against a large drop.

The broad tape is softer. The S&P 500 ETF was at 762.21, down 0.23% (CNBC, 6:48 AM ET), after closing Oct 22 at 763.96, down 1.18%, with a session low of 761.17 (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET Oct 22). The Nasdaq-100 ETF was at 704.34, little changed (CNBC, premarket), after closing at 704.47, down 2.86%.

The test from the Editor's Cut

The Oct 22 Editor's Cut read the session as a washout, not yet confirmed, and named the Oct 23 open as the test. Two levels frame it. The 762.04 line is the near-term marker the S&P 500 ETF tested all afternoon Oct 22 and closed back above; premarket at 762.21 (CNBC, 6:48 AM ET), it sits less than a quarter point above that line. The deeper line is 752.89, the level named in the AB Desk read (~7:15 AM ET Oct 23): the desk's stated line is that if the S&P 500 ETF fails to hold 752.89, the TEMPORARY DIPS assessment is wrong, and the desk says so. A quick reclaim and hold above 762.04 would fit the washout read; a gap lower that extends would not. These are reads, not forecasts.

Sector tape

At the Oct 22 close, consumer staples led (+3.31%), with utilities (+2.07%) and health care (+1.32%) behind them, while technology fell 3.27% (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET Oct 22). In premarket trading, the largest tech platforms were all within about 1% of their Oct 22 closes, mixed in direction (CNBC, premarket). Earnings beats were not rewarded in parts of AI-adjacent hardware and power: a data-storage maker, a fuel-cell power company and a building-services contractor were each down more than 2% despite beats (CNBC, premarket).

TRH

TRH reads DRAWDOWN RISK SEVERE. P* 79% (AB Desk gauges, Oct 22 close, ~4:12 PM ET), rung SEVERE, a hazard read, not a forecast. There is no Oct 23 reading before the open. The rung moved from HIGH to SEVERE over the Oct 22 session (AB Desk gauges, after the Oct 22 close, ~4:12 PM ET).

SHC

SHC reads INCIPIENT since Oct 6, with no touch: the S&P 500 ETF was 1.93% below its Oct 6 high as of the Oct 22 close, with components S 50 and D 39 (AB Desk gauges, computed 5:13 PM ET Oct 22).

Three-axis read

MARKET VALUE INTACT, TEMPORARY DIPS, at low conviction, held from the Oct 22 close until the 9:30 AM ET open (AB Desk gauges, ~4:12 PM ET Oct 22). The value read and the hazard read point in different directions, and the desk shows both.
