Tesla reported third-quarter 2026 results after the Oct 21 close. Adjusted EPS was $0.48 against a $0.43 LSEG consensus, so it beat. Revenue was $28.05 billion against $27.9 billion. One estimate set cited a higher $28.3 billion revenue figure, so the top-line comparison depends on the source.

What moved

The core auto business stayed soft. Automotive revenue was $20.56 billion, down 3% from a year earlier, and deliveries were 486,532, down 2%. Margin went the other way. Automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits rose to 18.1%, from 16.3% in Q2 and 15.4% a year earlier. Energy storage deployments were 13.7 GWh, but energy revenue fell to $2.88 billion from $3.42 billion. Services and other revenue rose to $4.61 billion.

GAAP net income was $787 million, and non-GAAP net income was $1.70 billion. Free cash flow was $1.53 billion, back above zero after a negative second quarter. Capex was $4.73 billion. Reuters reported that Tesla now expects 2026 capex of roughly $20 billion, below its earlier forecast of more than $25 billion.

On the call

The webcast started at 5:30 PM ET. Musk declined to add to his Oct 20 merger comments: "I think I said everything that should be said yesterday," per CNBC. He also said robotaxis would not move the needle this quarter, per CNBC. On Optimus, he said there was "still quite a lot of work to do with regard to the AI and the robot for it to be truly useful for open-ended tasks," per CNBC. He put the long-run cost of the Terafab chip venture at "north of $100 billion," per Yahoo.

Shares closed the regular session at $386.47 and rose as high as $394.97 right after the release. Once the call began they slipped from about $386 to the $379 area. By 7:59 PM ET they were at $373.63, down 3.3%.

Sector frame

Going into the print, the desk's sector map (as of Oct 21 close) had consumer discretionary in confirmed rotation up, in an uptrend and leading SPY. The desk's market read at the close: TRH 'DRAWDOWN RISK HIGH · P* 39%,' where P* is a hazard read, not a forecast; SHC 'NO DRAWDOWN'; three-axis read TEMPORARY DIPS, market value intact, at low conviction. The after-hours decline came as the sector backdrop was firm. The coverage does not pin it to a single cause.
