By The Editor and the AB Desk
The editor's read
On Oct 22, the three-axis read was MARKET VALUE INTACT, TEMPORARY DIPS, at low conviction, while the drawdown-risk gauge moved to SEVERE and SHC showed no touch. The market hazard read is P* 78% (Oct 22 close, ~4:12 PM ET), a hazard read, not a forecast.
From the index level, Oct 22 looked like a broad selloff. The editor reads it as something narrower: chips sold off on someone else's spending, before the largest names report, while banks and Apple finished green. The selling looks overdone, and it looks like a washout of weak hands. The TEMPORARY DIPS read holds, though the risk gauge says caution. Those two things pull in different directions, and the desk shows both.
1. Early drops in the leaders were the warning
The leaders cracked before the index did. Micron fell 3.62% on Oct 13 and 4.10% on Oct 14 (953.19 to 914.13), then 5.63% on Oct 16 (Yahoo Finance daily closes). Alphabet fell while the S&P 500 ETF rose on two straight sessions: on Oct 20 it slipped 1.13% as the S&P 500 ETF rose 0.34%, and on Oct 21 it closed at 334.76, down 1.62%, as the S&P 500 ETF rose 0.53%. It trailed the communication-services ETF on both days as well (Yahoo Finance). That slip came ahead of Meta's 6.98% drop on Oct 22 (Yahoo Finance, Oct 22 close), and in hindsight it was a warning sign.
Micron's own numbers had not turned. On Sept 30 it reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $54.23 billion against $51.07 billion expected. Adjusted EPS was $33.42 against $31.61 expected. It guided the current quarter to about $61.5 billion and $38.15 a share, against $35.40 expected (Micron press release and CNBC, Sept 30, 4:15 PM ET; LSEG consensus). The stock still fell on Oct 13, Oct 14 and Oct 16, and fell another 6.26% to 856.49 on Oct 22 (Yahoo Finance daily closes). Nothing in the company's own reported numbers explains the selling; the editor reads it as pressure from outside, as doubts about the AI spending cycle grew, with memory among the first to be sold. The desk reads that price-versus-numbers gap as an early sign of leadership cracking, not as a view on the stock.
On Oct 22 the gap widened. Alphabet closed at 324.22, down 3.15% (Yahoo Finance), against the S&P 500 ETF's 1.18% drop and communication services' 1.42% (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET). From the Oct 14 close, Alphabet finished down 6.74% and Micron down 6.31%, while the S&P 500 ETF was down only about 0.7% (763.96 vs 769.60). The desk treats this pattern, leaders in the strongest groups breaking while the index holds, as a standing check on its morning read.
2. Meta: the pop reversed, then the selling got heavy
Meta's after-hours high on Oct 21 was 720.06, up 3.2% from the 697.52 close (CNBC). By 6:46 AM ET Oct 22 it printed 693.32 premarket, below that close (CNBC). The pop was gone before the open. Meta closed at 648.85, down 6.98%, on 2.00x its Oct 13-21 average volume (Yahoo Finance).
3. The chip disconnect
Meta is not a chip stock, and its higher capex is revenue for the companies that supply AI chips and equipment. The chips fell anyway. At the close (Yahoo Finance): AMD 507.93, down 8.10%; Micron 856.49, down 6.26%; NVIDIA 212.21, down 4.40%; Broadcom 323.24, down 4.31%. The chip ETF closed at 523.35, down 5.99%, the heaviest ETF drop of the day (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET). For most of the session the sympathy selling ran on light volume: NVIDIA at 0.81x and Broadcom at 0.73x average volume at ~3:19 PM ET (CNBC).
4. Lam is its own story
Lam Research guided $8.6B for the December quarter. Its CFO said the figure "would have been a bit higher if not for some near-term supply chain constraints," and the company cited a lower China share (Yahoo Finance, Oct 22). That is company news, not sympathy. Lam led semis lower, closing at 230.15, down 11.76%, on 2.05x its Oct 13-21 average volume (Yahoo Finance).
5. All of this came before the largest names report
Per company IR: Microsoft reports Oct 28 after the close, with its call at 5:30 PM ET. Alphabet's call is Oct 28 at 4:30 PM ET, Amazon's is Oct 29 at 5:00 PM ET, and Apple's is Nov 2 at 5:00 PM ET.
On the desk's Pre-Earnings Watch (AB Elite, data 3:58 PM ET Oct 22), Alphabet carried the strongest earnings read of the 8 names tracked. The tape went the other way: on Oct 22 Alphabet closed behind both the S&P 500 ETF and communication services, its third straight session trailing the index (thread 1). The editor reads that gap as the signal: when a leader with a strong model read is still being sold, leadership may be cracking before the index. Alphabet reports Oct 28, and that report will test which side was right. A read, not a forecast or a recommendation, and not a view on the stock.
6. Washout, or not yet confirmed
For a washout: the heavy volume sat in the two names with their own news, Meta (2.00x) and Lam Research (2.05x), and the VIX touched 20.31 before closing at 18.99, up 13.85% (CNBC, 4:08 PM ET). Not a broad drop: the largest defensive names and the banks were not sold. Apple closed at 348.22, up 1.23%, and JPMorgan slightly higher at 336.51, up 0.39% (Yahoo Finance). By sector, staples rose 3.31%, utilities 2.07%, health care 1.32%, and financials and real estate 1.09%, while tech fell 3.27%, communication services 1.42% and industrials 0.95% (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET).
Not yet confirmed: elsewhere, volume ran only modestly heavy, from 1.08x to 1.29x in Micron, Alphabet, NVIDIA, Broadcom and AMD, and the S&P 500 ETF traded 1.03x (Yahoo Finance, pulled 4:11 PM ET, vs the Oct 13-21 daily average). Around 3:03 PM ET the S&P 500 ETF sat at 761.32, just above its 761.17 session low (CNBC), testing 761.2 to 761.4 through the afternoon (desk tape).
How it closed. The S&P 500 ETF closed at 763.96, down 1.18%, about 2.8 points off its low and back above the desk's 762.04 line (CNBC, 4:00 PM ET). There was no hard drop in the last 15 minutes. That is a recovery off the lows, not yet confirmed as a reversal.
The test. A rebound is what the coming sessions would test, starting with the Oct 23 open. A quick reclaim and a hold above the 762.04 line would fit the washout read; a gap lower that extends, or a close and follow-through below that line, would not. The desk reports what the tape shows, not what it hopes for.

The desk gauges
Desk gauges after the Oct 22 close (read ~4:12 PM ET):
- Three-axis: MARKET VALUE INTACT, TEMPORARY DIPS, LOW CONVICTION.
- TRH: DRAWDOWN RISK SEVERE. Market hazard read: P* 78% (Oct 22 close, ~4:12 PM ET), a hazard read, not a forecast.
- SHC: INCIPIENT since Oct 6; the S&P 500 ETF is 1.97% below its Oct 6 high; no touch; components S 47 and D 39.
- Trend: 58 to 54 since Oct 21 (Uptrend to Neutral). Thermometer: 40 degrees.
- Earlier in the Oct 22 session: the same three-axis read, TRH SEVERE and SHC no touch; the morning bulletin Oct 22 read CAUTION WARRANTED.
- The value read and the hazard read point in different directions on the same day, and the desk reports both.
What the Oct 23 session tests. The desk's standing read is TEMPORARY DIPS in the strongest sectors, chips and AI, unless the tape proves otherwise. Oct 22 appears to have been a temporary shakeout, but only follow-through in the Oct 23 session can show whether it holds. Two levels frame that test. The 762.04 line is the near-term marker the S&P 500 ETF tested all afternoon and closed back above: a quick reclaim and hold above it at the open would fit the washout read. The deeper line is 744.61, the level named in the desk read (3:47 PM ET Oct 22): a slip below 762.04 alone does not break the read, but if the S&P 500 ETF fails to hold 744.61, the TEMPORARY DIPS assessment is wrong, and the desk says so. Until then, the desk stands by its system. These are reads, not forecasts.
The publisher may hold positions in some of the companies described and does not trade them from 3 trading days before to 3 trading days after publication. This is the editor's read, not a forecast.
