This is a read of the calendar, not a forecast. The next eight sessions bring a Fed decision, the first look at third-quarter GDP, September PCE inflation, a full slate of Treasury note auctions, and earnings from five megacap companies. Here is the schedule, what the desk is watching, and why each item matters.
Where the tape stands (Oct 21 close)
SPY closed at 773.09, up 0.53%, per Yahoo Finance, Oct 21 close. The VIX finished at 16.68, per Yahoo Finance, Oct 21 close.
The desk's dashboard flagged the advance as a thin-volume rally and showed its regime signals in disagreement. The desk's nightly bulletin described a range-bound session with a sideways trend, in a TEMPORARY DIPS regime with market value intact. Its drawdown-hazard read was P* 39% as of the 4:31 PM ET Oct 21 nightly bulletin, a hazard read, not a forecast.
Two megacap reports landed after the Oct 21 close. In extended trading, Meta's stock jumped as much as about 7% during its conference webcast, then gave back most of that, last trading at $712.31 at 7:59 PM ET Oct 21. Tesla slipped 3.32% to $373.63 by 7:59 PM ET. The Oct 22 open is the first regular session to price both.

What the desk is watching
1. The 2:00 PM to 8:30 AM stretch. The Fed decides the afternoon of Oct 28. Eighteen and a half hours later, BEA publishes GDP and PCE. The desk's macro panel notes the funds rate at 3.75%–4.00%, "set at the September 16 meeting," with headline CPI running at 4.0% year over year. With no projections at this meeting, the statement and the press conference carry the whole message. The question for the desk is how the tape takes the Oct 29 inflation print against whatever the Chair says on Oct 28.
2. AI spending, three reports in 24 hours. Alphabet and Microsoft report Oct 28 after the close, and Amazon follows Oct 29 after the close. The bar for capex disclosure is already set: Meta's release narrowed its 2026 capital expenditure range to $135–145B and showed negative free cash flow of $2.12B for the quarter. CFO Susan Li said on Meta's webcast: "While these investments will take longer to generate returns than those in our core business, the breadth of monetization opportunities and internal efficiencies gives us confidence in their long term potential." (The Motley Fool transcript, published 8:38 PM ET Oct 21.) The desk will be comparing spending guidance and cash flow across the three, alongside the reported results.
3. Supply into the Fed decision. The 2-, 5- and 7-year notes all price within four sessions, with the 7-year on the same morning as GDP and PCE. Treasury announces the auction sizes on Oct 22.
4. Breadth under a thin tape. The Oct 21 advance came on light volume. The desk's rotation map shows staples and health care leading on relative strength, and communication services "below the 50-day." Whether the earnings reports through Nov 2 broaden participation or narrow it is the read the desk will update.
