Does the Chip Bid Survive the Open, on a Big-Tech Earnings Day?

October 21, 2026 · ET

Tuesday's close leaned to small caps; the open asks whether the hardware bid can hold, with three tech names reporting after the close.

Rotation tab read

Chips and tech are lagging on the desk's board, which frames the question for the open. On the Radar rotation map (6:46 AM ET Oct 21), consumer staples, health care, consumer discretionary, energy and oil and gas exploration and production are in confirmed rotation up, while tech, semiconductors, gold miners, airlines and uranium are in confirmed rotation down.

The Rotation tab (12:34 AM ET Oct 21) points the same way: health care, biotech, consumer staples, telecom and home improvement are rotating in, while semiconductor equipment, power infrastructure, uranium, aerospace and defense, and airlines are rotating out.

The Oct 20 close tilted toward small caps, not chips. The Russell 2000 ETF rose 1.66% and the semiconductor ETF finished down 0.38% (desk ledger, closes ~4:13 PM ET Oct 20). The Nasdaq-100 ETF fell 0.10% (same basis). Intraday, software had led the bounce, with chips roughly flat (Editor's Cut, 2:49 PM ET Oct 20).

Overnight, the tape leaned back toward AI hardware. An AI server maker issued a surprise preliminary update after the Oct 20 close (company release): it now sees September-quarter revenue of $18.5B–$19.5B, against a prior guide of $14.5B–$15.5B and consensus of about $15B (FactSet via investingLive; LSEG $15.23B via Reuters), and raised its gross margin estimate to 12.0%–12.5% from 10.4%–10.8%. Full results come Nov 3. The stock rose about 13% after hours, to $36.73 from a $32.47 close (ChartMill), and was about 12.7% higher premarket at $36.69 (Reuters, 5:13 AM ET).

Read-through moved with it. Two large server and PC makers rose about 4% and 2.5% after hours (ChartMill; investingLive had about 6% and 5%). Neocloud and chip names rose 2%–4% in early premarket (Yahoo/Stocktwits, 4:41 AM ET). A newly listed space and AI-compute company posted its first quarterly profit since its June IPO, led by AI compute, and the company's shares were up 6%–9% premarket (Yahoo). Power and cooling names rose more than 2% in early premarket after a prominent tech CEO said power and cooling, not chips, now limit AI compute. Barron's called the lift to chips modest.

The question for the open is whether that hardware bid holds against Tuesday's small-cap lead, with three large tech names reporting after today's close.

TRH

The desk dashboard reads "DRAWDOWN RISK HIGH · P* 46%" (desk dashboard, Oct 20 close); an intraday reading earlier that day was 49% (2:52 PM ET Oct 20). That's a hazard read, not a forecast.

The S&P 500 ETF closed at 769.05 (official 4:00 PM ET close, Oct 20), its second straight close just below 769.60.

SHC

SHC is incipient since Oct 6, with the S&P 500 ETF 1.25% below its Oct 6 high at the Oct 20 close, and no touch (desk dashboard, Radar data 6:46 AM ET Oct 21).

Tree Axis overall
