RED SESSION: SPY -1.17% | Range-bound

SESSION RECAP

SPY opened at $766.38 after an indicated 0.87% gap lower, briefly reached $767.71, and traded down to $761.17 before recovering to $764.06. The 2.89-point rebound from the low limited the damage, but the close remained 2.32 points below the session high and left SPY down 1.17%. Heavy volume at 1.28 times average and a 13.85% VIX increase showed elevated hedging and de-risking activity.

Initial jobless claims were 194,000 versus the 200,000 consensus and 200,000 previously, indicating that labor conditions remained firm. ES futures slipped 0.05% during the first 30 minutes after the release and 0.32% from the pre-print level; the subsequent cash weakness therefore looked more consistent with defensive positioning than a direct rejection of the claims number. SPY’s RSI-14 fell from 54 into the print to 46 late in the session, while the 10-year yield dropped 19 basis points to 4.95%.

Participation was split rather than uniformly weak: QQQ declined 2.86%, while IWM edged up 0.09% and six of 11 sectors finished positive. Consumer Staples, Utilities and Healthcare led as Technology absorbed the heaviest pressure. That combination produced a sideways, range-bound index session beneath the surface, with capital rotating away from megacap growth rather than exiting every part of the market.

MARKET SCORECARD

TODAY'S WINNERS

- ACN: +7.71% to $258.78 — Delivered the session’s strongest relative performance, separating from the broad Technology decline despite no company-specific catalyst in the supplied tape. - PG: +5.59% to $165.61 — Benefited from the pronounced rotation toward Consumer Staples, the leading sector of the session. - NEE: +4.64% to $81.92 — Advanced with Utilities as capital favored lower-beta and rate-sensitive exposure. - HD: +4.30% to $327.66 — Displayed idiosyncratic strength despite the broader caution and heavy-volume index decline. - JNJ: +3.86% to $267.74 — Participated in Healthcare leadership as defensive groups attracted capital.

TODAY'S LOSERS

- AMD: -8.10% to $507.93 — Led the downside as semiconductor and high-beta Technology exposure underwent sharp de-risking. - INTC: -8.04% to $85.49 — Fell alongside the semiconductor retreat, reinforcing the concentrated weakness within Technology. - META: -6.98% to $648.85 — Was hit by the rotation away from megacap growth and Communication Services. - CAT: -4.92% to $703.79 — Declined with cyclical Industrials as defensive groups gained leadership. - AMZN: -4.57% to $250.38 — Weakened amid broad pressure on large-cap growth and momentum exposure.

SECTOR ROTATION ANALYSIS

Consumer Staples gained 3.29%, Utilities rose 2.05%, and Healthcare advanced 1.33%, showing a clear preference for defensive earnings and lower-beta exposure. Technology fell 3.27%, Communication Services lost 1.41%, and Industrials declined 0.95%; combined with IWM’s 0.09% gain, that pattern points to selective rotation away from concentrated megacap leadership rather than indiscriminate liquidation.

TECHNICAL TAKEAWAYS

- SPY tested $761.17 and recovered to $764.06. The session low is the first observed support reference for the next trading day. - The $766.38 opening level and $767.71 session high capped rebounds. That range is the first resistance area requiring recovery to improve short-term momentum. - SPY’s close remained inside the day’s $761.17-$767.71 range, confirming a range-bound session rather than a decisive closing breakdown. - QQQ closed at $704.47 while IWM held $276.72, preserving the session’s sharp large-cap-growth versus small-cap divergence. The Level-Map invalidation remains $745.33 for SPY.

EARNINGS AHEAD

- Next session before the open: American Express (AXP), consensus EPS 4.47; the desk watches card-spending trends, credit quality and management’s outlook for consumer resilience.

LOOKING AHEAD

No verified post-close mover or futures indication was supplied as of 4:31 p.m. ET; AXP’s pre-open report and SPY’s $761.17 session low are the immediate next-session checkpoints. The TRH stance is MARKET VALUE INTACT — TEMPORARY DIPS, alongside DRAWDOWN RISK SEVERE · P* 79% as of October 22, 2026—not a forecast; with the October 28 FOMC decision and October 29 PCE release ahead, the model book uses smaller initial sizing and does not initiate leveraged exposure into the FOMC session. The desk reads dips as shallow and temporary while SPY holds 745.33: a read, not a forecast.

SESSION VERDICT

A heavy-volume defensive-rotation session in which concentrated Technology weakness pulled the major indexes lower while six of 11 sectors and small caps showed selective resilience.
