RED SESSION: SPY -1.07% | Range-bound
SESSION RECAP
October’s CPI was hot beneath the surface. Headline CPI rose 0.6% month over month, matching the 0.6% consensus, while the annual rate reached 3.7% versus 3.6% expected. Core CPI increased 0.3% month over month versus 0.2% expected and 2.6% year over year versus 2.5% expected. The rate-sensitive reaction was negative: ES futures fell 0.68% during the first 30 minutes after the release and were 1.43% below their pre-print level by 3:55 p.m. ET. The 10-year Treasury yield nevertheless declined 3 basis points to 5.19%, while WTI rose 1.0% to $95.10.
SPY opened at $774.89, briefly reached $776.30, and then traded as low as $766.71 before closing at $769.67, only $2.96 above the session low. The close marked a 1.07% decline following two consecutive down sessions. RSI-14 fell from 60 entering the release to 50, showing that the decline removed momentum excess without pushing the index into an oversold condition. VIX finished at 16.83, up 10.22%, as hedging demand increased.
Weakness was broad and concentrated in growth: QQQ lost 1.97%, IWM declined 1.91%, and only two of ten sectors finished higher. Heavy volume at 1.26 times average reinforced the importance of the move, although the session remained orderly rather than disorderly. Revealed positioning had already shifted toward a broad-drawdown posture before the print, helping explain why a modest core-CPI miss produced outsized pressure in technology.

TODAY'S WINNERS
- UnitedHealth (UNH): +4.77% to $395.79 — Led the tape as capital rotated toward healthcare, the session’s strongest sector. - Walmart (WMT): +3.46% to $116.16 — Its defensive consumer profile attracted relative demand during the broad growth-stock retreat. - AbbVie (ABBV): +3.39% to $283.65 — Participated in the healthcare-led rotation as investors favored less rate-sensitive earnings exposure. - Philip Morris (PM): +3.18% to $205.63 — Defensive and income-oriented characteristics supported relative strength during the risk reduction. - Costco (COST): +2.87% to $982.00 — Outperformed alongside other defensive consumer names as technology weakened. No verified company-specific catalyst was supplied.
TODAY'S LOSERS
- Oracle (ORCL): -8.82% to $130.57 — Led the declines as technology absorbed the strongest post-CPI de-risking. - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD): -5.73% to $570.82 — Semiconductor exposure came under pronounced pressure as the hot core reading weighed on rate-sensitive growth. - Intel (INTC): -4.56% to $98.12 — Fell with the broader semiconductor group during the technology-sector retreat. - Meta Platforms (META): -3.27% to $737.54 — Declined as communication services joined the broad growth-stock pullback. - Nvidia (NVDA): -3.16% to $221.30 — Weakness in AI and semiconductor leadership contributed to XLK’s position as the session’s worst-performing sector.
SECTOR ROTATION ANALYSIS
Healthcare led with a 2.51% gain, followed by energy at 0.61%; materials declined 0.12% but was still the third-best sector. Technology fell 3.00%, communication services lost 1.29%, and industrials declined 0.95%, indicating defensive rotation rather than indiscriminate liquidation.

TECHNICAL TAKEAWAYS
- SPY tested $766.71 and closed at $769.67. The session low is the first observed support for the next trading day; the close only $2.96 above it leaves that test unresolved. - SPY’s $774.89 opening level and $776.30 session high form the first resistance area. The index finished $5.22 below the open and $6.63 below the high. - QQQ closed at $728.95 after declining 1.97%. No intraday high or low was supplied, so the closing level is the only confirmed near-term reference rather than an invented support zone. - IWM closed at $271.42 after declining 1.91%. Its failure to provide diversification from QQQ confirms that Wednesday’s weakness extended beyond mega-cap technology.
LOOKING AHEAD
The TRH remains MARKET VALUE INTACT — TEMPORARY DIPS, alongside DRAWDOWN RISK HIGH · P* 52%; the desk reads dips as temporary and reversals can be sustained while SPY holds $725, but the model book keeps exposure gradual while the event window remains elevated. No verified after-hours movers or overnight futures indications were supplied as of 4:32 p.m. ET, making post-CPI follow-through, the $766.71 SPY low, and technology breadth the first next-session checks. SHC remains INCIPIENT, with its two forces converging toward the drawdown event but still 63 points from the required touch.
SESSION VERDICT
A broad, heavy-volume defensive rotation left SPY near its session low as hotter core inflation drove concentrated pressure in technology and small caps.
